“Our objective in holding the event is to promote the uptake of the digital economy within Townsville,” AIC market research analyst Sean Smith said.

“Due to the NBN being rolled out, there is a great opportunity for small businesses to look at technology and ecommerce options opening up to them. In the workshops they will see how these can be applied to their own businesses, helping them to grow and become more competitive.”

Mr Smith said a ‘technology showcase’ would be part of the event, where participants would learn about the innovative tools, then “put their hands on them”.

North Queensland Small Business Development Centre (NQSBDC) chief executive officer Brian Arnold said local businesses would also learn how to compete in the “worldwide shopping mall”. 

“It’s not about having a business that competes locally anymore – it’s about moving more-and-more towards competing globally, and businesses that choose not to look at this technology could fall behind,” Mr Arnold said.

“These workshops are a good start to future sessions being held in Townsville over the next three years through the Digital Enterprise Program (DEP) and offer a great opportunity for those who want to be first off the mark.”

The free workshops are at the NQSBDC at 184-188 Vickers Road North, Condon on Monday, November 28. They will be held over two separate sessions: 8.30am to 1pm and 12pm to 4:30pm. Both include a networking lunch.

A GOVERNMENT report has categorised the not-for-profit North Queensland Small Business Development Centre (NQSBDC) as a “world class” organisation for its work in assisting small-to-medium-sized enterprises.

Facilitated by the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI), the Probe for Service – MICROSCOPE Benchmark Analysis report evaluated the centre in terms of leadership, people, service, processes, performance management and overall performance under the category of business services.

When compared with other companies in the business services sector, the NQSBDC was well above point averages in both its practices and performance.

Chief executive officer Brian Arnold said he was “extremely honoured” to be the leader of an organisation which was deemed to be a high-standard industry leader.

“Achieving this impressive status has been a team effort,” Mr Arnold said. “It is a great tribute to our staff, board of directors and members. It’s also a huge credit to the small business community that we are very much part of.
